This summer had some of the most erratic weather on record. Our goal is to make this the most successful year in reducing your school's carbon footprint to help in the fight against Climate Breakdown!

Thank you all for another fantastically successful year for Eco-Schools. This month saw the culmination of our Green Flag assessments for 2018/19, well done to all the schools that achieved Green Flag this year and thanks to all our brilliant assessors for all the vital work you do for us.

We’d like to welcome Georgina Black to the Eco-Schools team she will be our new Eco-Schools Officer organising Green Flags. Georgina was in her Eco-Committee when at Glenlola Grammar school in Bangor when they received their first Green Flag. She has since received a First Class Honours in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from QUB. She has worked on various conservation projects with TCV and RSPB and keeps bees and a small flock of sheep at home.

We wish you all a fantastic summer break but before you head off read the round up below and reflect on all your own successes this year too!

We are nearly at the end of another fantastic Eco-Schools year. Thank you all for the brilliant activities you have been doing – don’t forget to share your stories with us on social media or by email. We have seen wonderful work in schools achieving the Green Flag this year 134 so far and counting – there still some more to come in June.

We’d like to wish our hard working Eco-Schools Officer, Cathy, all the best as she heads off on maternity leave later in June.

We hope you all had a great Easter break! As we launch into the final term for this school year we hope you are all thinking about getting outside for a few lessons, planting up your gardens, picking up litter, looking out for wildlife and stretching your legs with a walk to school. There are lots of ideas highlighted below for you to get involved in. We are in full Green Flag assessment swing now for this last term and we ask you to bear with us as we organise your assessments during this very busy time!

We can’t believe the Teachers Conference is over for another year - what a great day it was! Thanks to all the schools that attended and helped out on the day. Read all about it and our exciting new Marine topic below. Thanks also to all the schools who have submitted Green Flag applications before the deadline – we will be working hard to arrange your assessment before the end of the school year but this can take some time to organise so bear with us please. Applications are still welcome but might not be assessed this year at this point.

Half term is behind us and we are galloping towards some big events before the Easter break; most notably the Teachers Conference on the 21st March – you only have until the 7th March to register for this landmark event so don’t delay! Don’t forget the deadline for first Green Flag applications is the 15th March and we look forward to receiving lots of applications. Eco-Schools NI now has a pinterest page with useful resources for the 10 topics check it out for inspiration. We also have launched some exciting new competitions with Translink and the Education Authority, read on to find out more!

Our first big celebration event is happening 21st March at the Teachers Conference - we look forward to seeing many of you there!

We hope the New Year is off to a great start for everyone. 2019 is a year to celebrate for us as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Eco-Schools programme. We would love to see and share any pictures or memories you have of the early years of the programme in your school – please send them to Ruth.

Our first big celebration event is happening 21st March at the Teachers Conference - we look forward to seeing many of you there!

April and May have been busy months for finishing projects and announcing winners. We are pleased to announce the winners of the Food Waste Challenge, and the Belfast City Council Wheelie Big Challenge.

A big thank-you to schools who have also taken part in the Translink Travel Challenge, we are collating the results and will announce them in next month’s newsletter.

Well done to all the schools who have taken part in the Big Spring Clean – don’t forget to register your results on the Live Here Love Here website and of course this is good data to log for Eco-Schools too!

Eco-Schools Event Special Newsletter 2018

We have an Event Special newsletter to catch you up on our Teachers Conference!

Here at Eco-Schools we can’t believe how quickly April has flown in. We are hoping April showers will bring May flowers!

Eco-Schools NI are currently looking for a new Project Officer in a full time, permanent capacity. For more information please visit the Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful website. The closing date is 9th May.

We were delighted to host our rescheduled Eco-Schools Teachers Conference on the 20th April in glorious sunshine at CAFRE Greenmount Campus. We would like to thank DAERA for funding a fantastic day.

This newsletter is focusing on the outcomes of the event, all the awardees and winners of Eco-Teacher of the Year. For other project information please refer to our Mid April newsletter or the website.

Post Easter newsletter 2018

The post-Easter newsletter is now up and ready to be viewed!

We hope you all have had a great Easter break and are ready for an action packed summer term. Due to the Easter break we are sending this mid-April newsletter and we will also be sending an Event Special newsletter at the end of April with all the news from our Teachers Conference on the 20th April.

To all the teachers and delivery partners registered for the Teachers Conference that had to be rescheduled, due to the snow, we say a big thanks for your patience. We are delighted that everyone has been able to accommodate the new date and are looking forward to greeting you all at what is promising to be a great event.

Many thanks also to all the teachers who submitted a Green Flag application by the deadline in March. Cathy will be working hard to get assessment dates organised over the next couple of months. For those who didn’t meet the deadline you can of course still submit an application for assessment next school year.

We have had another busy month at Eco-Schools with lots of schools getting involved in the Food Waste Challenge, Young Reporters for the Environment and the Translink Travel Challenge.

Many thanks to all the schools who sent in entries for Eco-Teacher of the Year, we were overwhelmed by the quality of the entries, and had over 40 nominees. It was really not easy to choose a winner. We are so grateful to have so many amazing and inspirational teachers working on this programme that their pupils clearly hold in high regard. Thank you all for the excellent work you do.

We are launching into New Year with enthusiasm. There is so much to take part in and look forward to in the next term, including the Eco-Schools Teachers Conference on the 2nd March and lots of great projects.

Well done to schools renewing their Green Flags who got their application in by the 10th January deadline, we really appreciate the effort you put in and are enjoying reading about all the great work you have been doing. You are a constant inspiration to us.

We can’t quite believe that the first term is over already – where has the time gone? Before you head off we would just like to give you a few ideas to think about for next term.

There is still plenty of time to get involved in the Food Waste Challenge, Young Reporters for the Environment, the Wheelie Big Challenge (Belfast), the Translink Travel Challenge and Cash for Clobber – read all about them below as well as some exciting events coming up.

As the nights draw in and Christmas approaches we have been thinking a lot about food waste here at Eco-Schools. We have been developing the Food Waste Challenge and are excited about primary schools taking part through Eco-Schools actions and post primary schools taking part through Young Reporters for the Environment.

We are delighted to annouce the date of this year’s Eco-Schools Teachers Conference on the 2nd March at CAFRE Greenmount.

We would also like to remind schools wishing to renew their Green Flag in 2018 that the deadline for renewal applications is 10th January 2018.
