Antrim Borough Council can support the eco-school programme in a number of ways such as waste and recycling, litter and healthy living. For full details on how we can support each topic please get in touch with the contact provided.

Waste topic:
Some examples of how we can support the subject of waste and recycling within your school include:

  • Provision of teachers guide to Reduce, Reuse & Recycle – includes teacher’s notes on a range of waste related topics followed by key-stage specific activities for use in the classroom.
  • Environmental Youth Speak – a Northern Ireland wide environmental speaking competition on the topic of waste. Regional heats are held each year around March / April time followed by a grand final event.
  • Recycling education vehicle – an interactive education vehicle available at certain times of the year for school visits. The vehicle is a shared resource and is allocated to Antrim Borough Council twice each year.
  • Ongoing competitions, offers and initiatives are available to schools throughout the year, the Environmental Education & Awareness Officer makes schools aware via email and are always offered on a first come, first serve basis.
  • School presentations can be arranged with the Environmental Education & Awareness Officer

Global perspective:

  • Antrim Borough Council runs numerous Fairtrade related initiatives throughout the year. The Borough was awarded Northern Ireland’s first Fairtrade Borough in September 2010 and is always keen to further develop Fairtrade within the Borough. Schools can get involved in the various initiatives being run throughout the year or they can get in touch with the Environmental Education & Awareness Officer for assistance in developing their own way of supporting Fairtrade within their school.  Schools will be notified of upcoming events and initiatives via email

Litter:

  • School visits and presentations can be arranged with the Borough Warden, Paul Chapman who can provide information on problems associated with littering.  This also includes the problematic issues associate with dog fouling.
  • Litter picks are also arranged with local schools and community groups to generate community spirit in looking after their local environment.

Air Quality:

  • Air quality trailer – An interactive education trailer is available to visit schools on request. Topics covered include common air pollutants, sources of air pollution, health effects of air pollution and ways to minimise our own impacts on local air quality.
