The Western Education and Library Board (WELB) is the local authority for the provision of education and youth services in the District Council areas of Derry, Fermanagh, Limavady, Omagh and Strabane. The area has a population of almost 298,303 which represents 16.7% of the Northern Ireland total. This includes 56,742 pupils.
The WELB’s Curriculum Advisory and Support Service (CASS) provides guidance and support on all areas of the curriculum to teachers in all types of schools. School Link Officers work with the Environment and Society, Local and Global Citizenship, Home Economics, Geography, and Work Around Us teams (including Healthy Eating, Fair Trade, Global Dimension, etc) to support Education for Sustainable Development and the ECO Schools’ Programme.
The WELB’s Energy and Environment Officer, John Coney, provides specialist energy and environmental advice and guidance to schools and other locations to help reduce their environmental impact and work towards Government reduction targets.
