The environmental services team are committed to changing waste behaviour throughout the area and believe children can play an integral part in this, the hope being that if they learn best practice at a young age, this will continue throughout their lives. The waste minimisation education package will initially be rolled-out to Primary schools throughout the Council area giving them the opportunity to view the DVD’s, ask questions of a Recycling Officer, and get involved in a specially produced game which further emphasises the messages of waste minimisation. The waste minimisation education package also ties in with the Eco Schools project which many Craigavon schools are becoming involved in.
Waste education for schools and community groups
Environmental Services offers trips and visits to all schools and community groups in Craigavon. This is a free service, which we would encourage all schools & community group to take it up.
Visits can be tailored to suit any age or type of group as necessary.
All of the trips and visits focus on our Reduce, Reuse and Recycle theme and the work of our waste management department.
This is a free service, which we would encourage all schools and youth groups.
We offer three main education packages to schools / groups:
1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle talk with quiz & DVD
The talk covers general information about why we should recycle, recycling rates in Craigavon and current recycling schemes in operation as well as tips on reducing waste in the home, school and office. The session last between 40-55mins.
2. Talk on Food Waste and tips on reducing your food bill
This talk helps people identify waste within their kitchens and is a call to action. This session usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
3. Trips to our recycling centres
Visits to our recycling centre at Newline, Lurgan, see how our waste is managed and learn where our materials go to be reprocessed or recycled. See first hand how well used the sites are and learn what happens to that old bottle of cooking oil!
The sessions usually last between 30 and 45 minutes.
All groups must arrange their own transport to the recycling centre
4. Ongoing School Competitions and projects
Every year Council engage with the local Primary schools for participation in a number of projects and competitions to develop the waste message and encourage local children to bring the message home to parents and friends.
As well as presenting to local schools and the public environmental services deliver a wide range of community campaigns and road shows to encourage residents to become more waste aware.
Each year several campaigns are delivered including Compost Awareness Week, Recycle Week, Reusable Bag Campaign and the Christmas recycling campaign.
