Ulster Wildlife Trust
The Ulster Wildlife Trust currently offers several curriculum based wildlife education & awareness programmes for schools, youth clubs, after-school and play groups. The Ulster Wildlife Trust’s education programmes are tools for inspiring and empowering young people to take positive action for their local and global environment and to recognise their responsibilities as the future caretakers of our planet. We strongly believe that getting outdoors is the best way to teach many of the educational and emotional needs of our children. In addition to our site based educational programmes we also offer specially designed workshops tailored to a number of themes for schools/youth/community groups to choose from, examples include - Wildlife Gardening, The World of Bats, Biodiversity Boxes, Flight in Nature and many more.
The UWT is currently running a Make Space For Nature School Grounds Project, funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. This 3-year project aims to support schools and pupils develop their school grounds for wildlife while bringing environmental education to life for the pupils and teachers. Schools involved in the project will receive up to 40 outreach sessions between September 2009 and March 2011 from trained and experienced environmental guides, improvements for biodiversity in the school grounds, educational resources linked to the revised curriculum and training for teachers. Participants will also receive support and advice to schools forming eco-clubs committees and will promote and assist schools to work towards awards such as Ecoschools, and Wildlife Watch Awards.
