Newry & Mourne District Council
Newry and Mourne District Council are very supportive of the Eco Schools award scheme. The Council has encouraged all schools to participate in the scheme through its bi-annual Schools’ Environmental Newsletter which is distributed to all principals and interested teachers in the district.
The Council can provide help and general guidance to registered schools on how to progress through the three stages of the awards scheme – bronze, silver and green flag.
Many of the competitions run by the Council every year as part of its ongoing environmental education programme can be successfully used by schools as evidence of work carried out on particular themes of the award scheme – these include the Schools Environmental Calendar, Cash For Clobber, Environmental Youth Speak, Wildlife Gardening Competition.
Council officers can provide expertise on the themes of Litter, Waste/Recycling and Biodiversity and provide free talks and presentations to schools on these themes on request.
In 2009 the Council was delighted that the combined efforts of the Council, Tidy NI and our schools culminated in the award of Five Green Flags in the district. With 40% of schools registered with the Eco Schools scheme the future is bright for Eco schools in Newry and Mourne!
